‘Golf Stars in secret training camp – shock!!

Shock news at the start of the countdown to the sixth running of the Aardgolf classic is that Ageing veteran Nick Burnett has lodged a complaint with the R & A about the unfair amount of practice gained by the other competitors.

At least three of the contenders have been spotted in Scotland playing more than one round.  Brown, Nicholson, and Taylor have all admitted to exceeding Burnett’s personal quota of three rounds a week. ‘It’s a fair cop’ said Nicholson, ‘we know when we’ve been caught’.  Burnett is livid, saying ‘I’m the only one allowed to play three rounds a week in the four months up to the Aardvark Golf tournament !!’.

The Aardgolf Desert Pro Classic will take place over Sept 6th-8th in Yorkshire, though details of the courses are being kept secret to stop Dennett and O’Neill from getting in some sneaky practice.

The tournament this year promises to be the most competitive yet – with all previous winners, Wagg (95), Brown (96), Wilks (97), Nicholson (98), and O’Neill (99) (and just to be clear that is the year they won in brackets, not their age) joining other declared starters: Allott, Burnett, ‘Beardo – the peoples’ champion, Colton, Dennett, ‘Mad-dog’ Maddocks, Taylor & Taylor and two debutants, Steve Elway from Gloucs and Dave Litt from Timperley in a field of 15.

The festival Du Golf will follow the usual format of three rounds of Stableford, aggregated to select the recipient of the coveted RW Thomas Shield.  The Ryder Cup Challenge will take place on Thursday morning.

Form Guide

Playing off 8, Nicholson came second in the first trial in May with 34 points.  Brown has been experimenting with one of the new super-drivers (200 yards straight and 100 yards to the left).  Taylor socred notable matchplay triumph over both in Scotland and looks a fanciable each-way bet (not just for golf either!).  Burnett is showing little despite 2 or 3 rounds per week.  Dennett and O’Neill have been practising in Daventry and recent form is un-confirmed, but both must be in contention.

Extended winter training means that Wagg and Tag have yet to post scores, whilst “Fats” Allott has been up to his regular trick of playing lots and submitting wildly inaccurate scores to keep his handicap high.

Fellow sheep-lover and Gloucestrian Steve Elway has reportedly chalked up a win playing off 22-ish.  Litty has been spotted on ‘Alty Muni’ – though the old mac must get in the way of his swing … or maybe not?

Current betting: 3/1 Dennett, 7/2 Nicholson, 4 Allott, 9/2 O’Neill, 6 Brown, Wagg, 13/2 Taylor C, 7 Litt, Burnett, Elway, 9 Taylor T, Colton 10 Maddocks, Beardmore and 12-1 Wilks (the hopeless rank outsider).
